A day in the life of me.

I like that Nate calls to check in on me throughout the day. It's generally the same conversation:

Nate: "How are my babies?"
Me: "We're doing well!"
Nate: "What have you guys been up to today?"

And then I am often stuck. What HAVE we done today?? It takes me a moment or two to account for the last few hours of my day. And maybe that is because usually nothing too significant stands out. It all seems to be the same...cleaning, fixing meals, changing diapers, tending our garden, running errands, lovin' on the boys..you know, gettin' things done!

So this last Tuesday I decided to keep track (as best I could) what I did that day. Forgive me if you find it boring. Let's just say that this is a record for the future me to look at and smile about. OK! Here we go...

7:05am- Collin wakes up. I get him, pass him to Nate and go make a bottle. Climb back into bed to cuddle and feed Collin. Make another bottle (the boy is growing like a weed!) and hear Asher coming up the stairs..
7:30am- Meet the demands of Asher saying "Juice! Juice!". Toss the laundry down the stairs. Make the boys breakfast (peanut butter toast & bananas). Check email & blogger while they are eating.
8:05am- Nate leaves for work. Clean up the boys. Run the trash out to the curb. Change a poop diaper. Change a pee diaper. Change another poop diaper. Get the boys dressed. Get myself dressed & diaper bag packed.
9:00am- Head to the bank.
9:15am- Office Max to buy envelopes for Collin's birthday invitations.
9:25am- Home Goods store to look for a cute cake stand for Collin's party & also props for a newborn shoot I have coming up. As we're leaving the store, Asher accidentally knocks over a $30 vase.
9:45am- Home. Put Asher in the backyard to play. Make a bottle and put Collin down for a (long overdue) nap. I sing to him and rock him. He is out in a matter of minutes.
9:55am- Discover that Asher got into a jar of peanut butter and got some on my white linen couch. Clean that mess up. Change another poop diaper. Let Asher watch a movie of choice (Little Rascals vs. Cars...tough choice!) so that I can stuff & mail birthday invites, blog about San Diego & talk to my mom on the phone.
11:00am- Hand wash an overflowing sink full of dishes (our dishwasher is broken) while Asher alternates between lining up his cars in the living room & catching glimpses of his movie.
12:15pm- Asher and I head down to the living room to dance to "Hey Ya!" by Outkast. I bust up laughing when he actually yells out "Ice Cold!" at the appropriate places. Call and tell Nate all about it.
12:45pm- Collin wakes up. Make lunch for the boys. Clean them up. They play in the living room together while I talk on the phone/net surf. I bribe Collin into taking his first steps!! 3 in a row wow! I call Nate and tell him all about it.
2:25pm- Asher down for a nap.
2:40pm- Put Collin in the kitchen sink to play while I take the cutest pictures of him! Talk on the phone again...

3:00pm- Some young, hot, Russian girl comes to the door. I don't know her, but she knows my name. She is trying to sell children's books. I get suckered into inviting her inside. She asks a lot of overly-personal questions about Nate. ?? I finally work up the nerve to let her know we're not interested. Collin seemed to enjoy crawling all over both her and me.
3:45pm- Collin down for a nap. Mommy takes a nap too.
4:15pm - I wake up, internet.
4:30pm- Wake Asher up. We both watch home videos together on the computer.
5:30pm- Collin wakes up. I send Asher outside to play so that I can make dinner with Collin holding onto my leg for most the time. Talk to Nate- realize he will be home late. Ugh.
6:45pm- Nate home. While he grills, I go tend our garden. The children are playing outside...it's a lovely evening.
7:15pm- We eat a really awesome meal: Grilled Salmon with Chorizo, Spinach and Fingerlings. I'm not usually into fish, but this was really nice...(recipe here)

7:45pm- Re-create Collin taking his first steps for Daddy. He does it again, this time taking four steps in a row!

8:00pm- Nate puts Collin to bed. Nate, Asher & I go downstairs and read books together. I turn on some Outkast so we can watch Asher shout "Ice Cold!" again.

9:00pm- Asher discovers his shadow. He and I have a fun time making bird & dog shadows on the wall.
9:30pm- I'm on the computer again. Nate takes Asher to bed. They read scriptuers, say prayers, brush teeth. I come in to sing him a song.
9:45pm- I fall asleep on the couch cuddled up next to Nate while he reads a book from the Fablehaven series.

So, as I look back over my day, I have observed a few things: 1) I spend too much time on the computer. Looking for the perfect cake stand, checking your blogs, online banking, getting photography tips, etc. These aren't bad things necessarily, but they can be time-wasters. I have made a goal to only go online twice a day for a limited amount of time. And preferably when the kids are asleep. 2) I don't usually talk on the phone as much as I did this day. 3) I wanna fill my day with the BEST things...reading scriptures and praying, playing with my kids, teaching them...exercising maybe. :) ugh... 4) It can be hectic, but I love what I do. I love being home with my kids. I love seeing all their firsts. I love my husband. He's such a good guy. And I also feel grateful for this blog & that it helps me keep track of how wonderful our little life can be.

SO exciting about Collin walking!!! Yea! That sounded like a great day to me too. The computer sounds like a bit of an outlet for you, so don't feel too guilty about using it through out your day. How's the garden coming?

Awww...we did talk alot that day, and yet, there are some days we don't talk at all. This was a cool way to document a "typical day". Thanks for sharing it with us! I totally remember typical days just like this one with you kids, and I'll always cherish them - so glad we are blessed to have hard working husbands, and that we are/were able to be stay-at-home mommy's by choice :-) XXXOOO Mom B.
