And then decided to go for a little hike down to the lake so Nate could go fishing...
Asher finally fell asleep- it was really quiet and peaceful there.
We left after a while though because the fishing was pretty bad. That's when the fun began. :) We tried getting Asher to take a nap in the tent, but there was WAY too much to look at and hear for him to go to sleep despite the fact that he was beyond exhausted. Instead he crawled around all over the sleeping bags, occasionally poking his head out the tent flap to see what mom and dad were up to. We built a fire and got our tin foil dinners cooking. Asher was becoming more irrational and needed to be held throughout all that- not an easy task!
By the time it was dark and we had toasted marshmallows, we were really tired, so we put pj's on and climbed into the tent for bed. WHY did I think that getting a teething baby to sleep outside would be easy and fun?? WHY did we have to get stuck with a campsite next to a loud, partying Hispanic family (complete with pinata and harmonica mariachi music)??
Finally, after what seemed like endless amounts of crying from Asher, we fell asleep to the sounds of "Ninos silencio!" and "donde esta ____". (On the hard ground, sloping downward I might add.)
Just when I was beginning to think that we would survive the night, Asher woke up screaming crying...there was nothing Nate or I could do to calm him down except take him outside and walk around. After taking several turns doing that, we finally decided that we were too tired and frustrated to continue our campout. We tossed everything in the back of the car and drove home at 12:30 am! :)
Looking back now, Nate and I realize how silly it was for us to take a teething 7 month old on a campout. We have vowed never to take a baby in that stage camping ever again. Nate and I both still love to camp, but are now a lot more grateful to our own parents for all the effort they put into family campouts when we were growing up- it really is a lot of work just to sleep and eat outside! haha!

camping
For the past few weeks, Nate and I have been feeling the "itch" to get outside of Anthem, and so we decided to go camping! Why not? Asher is at a fun age and we are really missing cooler weather and green trees, so we chose Lynx Lake in Prescott as our destination. It is only about 45 min North of us and seemed promising- fishing, hikes around the lake, flush toilets, etc. Friday morning we loaded up the 4Runner and took off, feeling very excited. Even though we arrived by 2pm, there was only one campsite left and it was by no means secluded. We had a busy road on one side and lots of other campers on the other. Oh well! No problem! We set up camp...

That is hilarious! You poor things, I don't blame you for going home. That camping spot looks amazing, I'll have to get directions from you.
Camping is all about building memories...for the kids! So wait until Asher will be able to remember:) The nights are totally hellish. Been there, a lot.
Your blog looks awesome! Loved the crawling video.
Okay, that is seriously funny! I love to camp too but it is definitely different with kids. I think the easiest age to take them is when they're babies - but forget it when they're crawling. We've been up in the middle of the night driving around trying to get little ones to sleep too. Good for you for calling it quits!! :)
Ahhhh yes, camping with babies and children....memories I will always cherish ;-)
Camping is play for the kids and work for the parents, unless of course you grew up with G-Pa Walker for a dad...then kids do work too.
Seriously, he just needs to be a little older and it will be fun. Actually, most the memories dad & I have of camping with you kids are very fun memories!!
Vanessa and I decided to go camping with Bobby about a month ago. Granted, he was 12 months instead of 7, but the parallels are amazing.
Naps - forget about it
Holding Bobby - forget about it - in the end he crawled around in the dirt a lot and had a great, and messy time
Sleeping at night - forget about it - We had the Urkanian contingent next to us, also having quite the party and then sawing uplogs right behind our tent, then Bobby finally fell asleep and a domestic violence dispute started on the other side of camp. Bobby stayed asleep, until the temperature dropped to 42 degrees. In the end he was wearing three layers, including some of Moms socks over his legs. By morning we had all had only 4 hours of sleep and went for a drive. Bob slept, Dad fished and Mom got the shaft. She's a good Mom.
Not the best camping trip ever, but it was memorable.
I can just picture it, sounds awful, but what a funny memory! We tried to go camping a few weeks ago, it was terrible too. It poured so we had to sleep in the car, I dont think I slept a wink, but of course Shawn was just snoozing away, I wanted to punch him. I almost jumped in the front seat and drove on home! But good for you guys for being adventurous and trying, you get points!
Okay, eventhough I wrote previously, the 2 previous comments - Chris & Vanessa and Ashley Elizzabeth.....had me laughing so hard! I still have tears in my eyes - good times, good times :-D
Mom Bartlett
p.s. Dad added "Try camping with a baby & preschooler in 105*F. in Texas or freezing with a 1 yr. old, 5 yr. old (Cortney) and 9 yr.old in the Canadian Rockies because you bought cheap sleeping bags to save money...." What were we thinking??
I have been meaning to post a comment on this one for forever!! I died laughing (of understanding) when I read this post!! Good post!! I don't blame you at all for going home!!! We would have done the same thing. Danny and I have thought about camping...but after reading your blog I think we can wait a few years!!! lol
